New light buoys in our fairway

New light buoys in our fairway

Maritime safety devices in the Piteå Harbor fairway have been updated. Previous units have been replaced with GPS synchronized light buoys. The update will lift the current darkness restrictions for ships over 170 meters and means that the port will continue to strengthen its position in the Gulf of Bothnia.

With the help of the work boat Optimus, Port of Piteå’s operation technicians have gone out into the fairway to replace old buoys. The work went smoothly and our fairway is now completely updated with GPS-synchronized light buoys.

In the past, the fairway has had dark restrictions for vessels over 170 meters. The restrictions were set by the Swedish Maritime Administration to ensure safety in the waterway, but with the update, the restrictions will be lifted.
– We are happy that the work has been completed. In the process, we have consulted with the Maritime Administration to create a safe fairway even in the dark hours of the day for ships over 170 meters, says Clas Johansson, shipping manager at Port of Piteå.
– We want to be able to meet our customers’ needs on all days and hours of the year. It is important that we continue to develop in order to strengthen our position.
