New light buoys – an upgrade for the future

In August, work will begin on updating maritime safety devices in Piteå harbor’s fairway. Existing units will be replaced with GPS synchronized light buoys. The update will lift current darkness restrictions for vessels over 170 meters.

The fairway into Port of Piteå has dark restrictions with restrictions for vessels over 170 meters. The restrictions are established by the Swedish Maritime Administration, to guarantee the safety.

This autumn the fairway’s light buoys are being updated.
– In consultation with the Swedish Maritime Administration, we have found a solution to lift these restrictions, says Clas Johansson, shipping manager at Port of Piteå.

Existing marine safety devices (SSA) will be replaced with GPS-synchronized light buoys. The synchronization means that the buoys flash at the same time and create a safe fairway for both inbound and outbound sailing.
– We want to be able to serve our customers during all days and times of the year. With the expansion now taking place in northern Sweden, it feels important that we are at the forefront, says Clas Johansson.
